Find Out What You Really Need

“The best way to find out what we really need is to get rid of what we don’t.”

Marie Kondo, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Most of us try to figure out what we need by thinking about it. We stand in front of a crowded closet and ask which shirts we’d miss, and the honest answer is always “all of them, probably.” Thinking about it doesn’t work, because everything looks useful when it’s still sitting there.

Marie Kondo flips the order. You don’t find out what matters first and then clear the rest. You clear first, and what matters shows up. Once the extra stuff is gone, the things you actually reach for stop hiding behind the things you don’t. The good knife is easy to find. The jacket you love is the one you wear.

It also takes some pressure off. You don’t need a perfect list of your needs before you start. You just need to be a little braver about letting go, and then pay attention to what you miss. Usually it’s less than you’d guess. Sometimes it’s nothing at all.

This isn’t about owning some magic small number of things. A family with a toddler needs more stuff than a single person in a studio, and that’s fine. The point is that your own needs get clearer when they aren’t buried.

How to live it this week

Pick one category. Mugs, kitchen utensils, hoodies, or charging cables. Something small enough to finish in one evening.

Pull it all out. Every piece in that category goes on one table or bed, even the ones hiding in the car or the junk drawer. Seeing the whole pile at once is usually the moment you realize you own eleven spatulas.

Put back only what you’d grab first. Return the pieces you use and like. Everything else goes in a box by the door with today’s date on it.

Wait a week. If you go back to the box for something, take it out. That’s a real need, and now you know it. Whatever is still in the box next week goes to donation without a second look.

One small category won’t change your life. But it shows you, in your own house, how little you were actually using. That lesson tends to spread to the next drawer on its own.
