The Easiest Way to Organize Your Stuff Is to Get Rid of Most of It

A messy drawer is usually not a storage problem. It is a volume problem. We buy bins, labels, and a better shelf, then wonder why the same pile returns. Francine Jay said the quieter fix:

“The easiest way to organize your stuff is to get rid of most of it.”

Francine Jay, The Joy of Less

She was not anti-home. She was anti-pretend. Organizing is rearranging a load you still have to carry. Getting rid of most of it is how the remaining things get a place they can keep.

Decluttering fails when it becomes a project with new products. The bag by the door is the tool. The donation drop on a trip you already take is the finish. If the bag sits for a month, you organized your guilt, not the drawer.

This week, pick one container you actually use: a junk drawer, a bathroom cabinet, or the chair that collects clothes. Empty it onto a table. Keep only what you used in the last month, or what you can name a job for. The rest leaves the house the same day. No new bins. No “later” box.

When the container closes without a fight, stop. That is organized. You did not become a new person. You made the load smaller, which is the only system that lasts past Friday.
