You Can Remove a Significant Amount of Stress by Reducing the Items in Your Closet

A closet can run a morning. Too many hangers, too many almosts, a pile of “maybe later.” Courtney Carver started Project 333 after a multiple sclerosis diagnosis made stress expensive. Thirty-three items, three months. Not a costume. A smaller set of decisions.

“You can remove a significant amount of stress from your life simply by reducing the number of items in your closet.”

She found that people noticed their own outfits more than hers. The experiment was never about looking spare. It was about getting the closet out of the way of the day. Fewer choices at 7 a.m. Fewer sales tabs on Saturday. Enough, for once, instead of a missing piece.

You do not have to live at 33. The number is a container, not a personality. Minimalism here is practical: the clothes that actually get worn, in reach. The rest can wait in a box you cannot see into. If you do not miss it, it was never dressing you. It was occupying you.

This week, do not rebuild a wardrobe. Bag the maybes. Pull every piece you did not wear last month, put it in a tote, and park the tote out of sight for seven days. Dress from what is left. If a black hole opens, retrieve one item. If the mornings get quieter, the tote can leave the house. One bag is enough of a test.

Carver used a closet to learn what enough felt like, then took the lesson to the kitchen and the calendar. Start where you get dressed. The rest of the house can wait its turn.
