A price tag is a short number. The hours behind it are not. You earn the cash, then you spend it, and the two steps feel like different lives. Vicki Robin glued them back together:

She was not scolding shopping. She was naming the raw material. Life energy is the hours you will not get back. A job trades those hours for pay. A checkout trades the pay for an object, a meal, a subscription. Skip the middle and the object feels cheap. Count it and a lot of “just this once” starts to look like a long shift you already worked.
Robin and Joe Dominguez asked people to find a real hourly wage, after commute, work clothes, and the recovery you buy because the week is hard. Then they asked a blunt question of every line on the statement: was this worth the life it cost? Frugal living, in that frame, is not clipping coupons. It is refusing to spend hours you already sold on something you will not remember in a month.
This week, do the conversion once. Pick one want, not a bill, not groceries. Divide the price by what you actually clear in an hour, not the number on the offer letter. Write the hours next to the item. If it costs three hours and you cannot picture those three hours, wait. Put it on a list. If it still matters on Friday, buy it on purpose. If it does not, you just bought the hours back.
You do not have to become a monk. You have to stop pretending money is a separate substance from your Tuesday.
