Love People and Use Things, Because the Opposite Never Works

Most of us do not mean to reverse the order. A couch gets a cover. A phone gets a case and a backup and a newer case. A friend gets a text that says “soon.” Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, The Minimalists, keep putting the sequence back where it belongs:

“Love people and use things, because the opposite never works.”

They were not the first to say a version of it. The line stuck because it is a diagnosis. You can tell which way you have it by what gets your careful energy. If you would rather rearrange a closet than sit with someone for an hour, the objects are winning. If a scratch on a table ruins a dinner, the dinner was never the point.

Minimalism, here, is not a spare apartment. It is a ranking. Things are tools. People are not. When the ranking flips, you start maintaining a warehouse of stuff and a thin list of actual conversations. The house can look calm and still be a place where nobody is tended.

This week, pick one object you treat like a guest of honor, and one person you have been postponing. The object might be a jacket you never wear because it is “too nice,” or a gadget you keep upgrading instead of using. Give it a job this week or let it leave. Then give the person a real hour: a walk, a meal, a call with the phone in another room. No errand stacked on top. No “we should catch up” without a time.

You will feel the tug to protect the thing and rush the person. That tug is the quote doing its work. Use the object. Love the person. The other way around is how a week fills up and still feels empty.
