It Is Not the Man Who Has Too Little That Is Poor

“It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.”

Seneca, Letters from a Stoic

Seneca wrote that line almost two thousand years ago, and it still lands because it flips the usual story. Poverty, in his view, isn’t a number in your bank account. It’s the gap between what you have and what you keep wanting next.

That gap is easy to miss. You can live in a comfortable house, fill a closet, and still feel behind if every scroll shows someone with more. Craving doesn’t announce itself as greed. It shows up as “just one upgrade,” “when I get that raise,” “once the kitchen is finished.” The finish line keeps moving, so you never feel rich—even when you already have enough to live well.

Frugal living isn’t about being cheap for sport. It’s noticing when desire is doing the talking. Seneca isn’t telling you to celebrate scarcity. He’s saying the person who wants less can feel wealthy on less, while the person who wants endlessly stays broke no matter the paycheck.

The useful part is practical. You don’t need a philosophy seminar. You need a way to catch craving before it spends your week.

Here’s a concrete way to live it this week.

Pick one category where you often want “just a little more”—coffee runs, clothes, home gadgets, or online carts. For seven days, before you buy anything in that category, write one sentence: what I already have that covers this need. If the sentence is honest and the need is covered, skip the purchase. If it isn’t, buy the thing without guilt. The point isn’t a spending ban. It’s interrupting the reflex that says more equals better.

At the end of the week, look at what you didn’t buy. Notice whether you felt deprived or lighter. That feeling is data. Keep the pause that worked. Drop the one that felt like punishment. Enough isn’t a vibe. It’s a decision you practice until craving loses its grip.
