Nothing Could Be More Invigorating Than Going Slow

“In an age of speed, I began to think, nothing could be more invigorating than going slow.”

Pico Iyer, The Art of Stillness

Iyer wrote that after years of airports and deadlines taught him the same lesson from the other direction. Speed feels like power until it starts costing you the parts of the day you actually wanted. Going slow is not laziness dressed up. It is choosing a pace where you can still taste the coffee, hear the person across from you, and notice that you already have enough of the afternoon left.

Most of us do not live at one speed. We sprint through email, then try to rest by scrolling at the same clip. The body never gets the memo that the race ended. Invigorating, in Iyer’s sense, means restored. Not more wired. A slow walk after lunch can wake you up better than another tab. A single task finished without a podcast can feel strangely rich.

This is not a call to quit your job or move to a monastery. It is permission to stop treating every empty minute like a hole that needs filling. When you drop the constant hurry, you often find energy you thought you had lost for good.

Here is one concrete way to live it this week. Pick one daily block you usually rush: the first 30 minutes after waking, lunch, or the hour after work. Protect it as a slow zone. No multitasking soundtrack. No “while I’m at it” chores stacked on top. If you eat, just eat. If you walk, leave the phone in your pocket unless you need it for safety. If you sit with tea, sit with tea.

At the end of the week, ask one question: did that block make you more tired, or more awake? Keep the version that restores you. Drop the rest. Going slow only works when you practice it on purpose, in a real slot on the calendar, not as a vague wish you revisit when you are already exhausted.
